Just something that happened in a D&D game I play in. Things did not go well for my character :( She's a tough old bird,
though, I'm not too worried..

Bear with me, I don't normally write prose so this is a bit sucky.

---

As she was pulled backwards into the portal, following the foul, bloated mass that was the demon, Maya found that either time had slowed considerably, or her mind was running faster than usual. Before she slipped into nothingness- No, not nothingness, there was certainly something there, but it was horrible beyond consideration- the most mundane thoughts came to her. Who would look after her horse? What had she had for breakfast? It was her last meal, as it turned out, so it seemed important. She seemed to recall trail rations. Typical. More importantly, had she successfully thrown her brother Franco free of the portal? Maya dimly recalled doing so.. Good, then her job was done, her siblings can safely return to their parents, and life could continue as normal.

Just.. not for her.

She was falling now, she realised, and had all but resigned herself to whatever lay at the bottom of the gaping chasm, when she felt something grab her hand. Maya's heart lept- Perhaps Ellie had caught her, her sister with whom she had often sparred with in the training yard. Ellie was strong, resolute, she would have no trouble lifting her back into the world.

Maya looked up, into the eyes of her brother, Inigo. Inigo, the youngest, the weakest. Inigo, who would sit in the corner of the training yard while the sisters sparred, reading some book. Inigo, whose grip was already slipping.

“I've got you!” he shouted, sliding through the portal an inch or so with the weight of her. Maya had already realised that there was no way he could pull her up, he could barely keep himself on the right side of the terrible rift. If he were to fall with her, because of her.. She couldn't bear the thought. Addie had caught hold of Inigo, but the weight of two people was clearly too much for her half sister.

“Let go!” Maya hissed, through clenched teeth.

“I can't let you fall!” he shouted. He always had been a stubborn one. Addie's grip had also begun to slip, her trembling fingers clinging to Inigo's clothes and backpack.

“You can and you will! I will NOT let you fall with me!” She tried her best nagging voice, but it cracked with fear. “Just let go!”

His sad eyes never left hers. Terrified as she was, she knew she was doing the right thing. Everything for the family, she had always been told. Always protect your brothers and sisters, no matter what. Give everything up for your family.

“Please.. Let go.” she whispered. Inigo stared at her, frustration and sadness etched on his face.

He let go.
